17 May 2008, Regarding the earthquake which occurred on 12 May in China. (Unofficial Translation)

The earthquake which occurred on 12 May 2008 in the Sichuan province of China has caused the death of over 40.000 people, while the same number of people are believed to be buried in the rubble. The earthquake has also led to heavy financial loss.

Turkey being one of the countries well aware of the destructive effects of earthquakes and the importance of international solidarity in critical times, has stood by China, with which traditionally it has good relations in every field, during these difficult days.

In this regard, following this disaster our Government has decided to provide humanitarian assistance to China in the amount of 2.000.000 USD. The said amount has been sent to our Embassy in Beijing to be transferred to the relevant Chinese authorities.
