of America and the Republic of Turkey concerning the Peaceful Uses
of Nuclear Energy. (Unofficial Translation)
The Agreement for Cooperation between the United States of America
and the Republic of Turkey concerning the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear
Energy was signed in Ankara on 26 July 2000. Following the completion
of the ratification process in accordance with the national legislations
of the two countries and the exchange of diplomatic notes, the Agreement
has entered into force as of 2 June 2008.
The Agreement, in recognition of the indispensable role of the
IAEA safeguards system in maintaining an effective non-proliferation
regime, provides a framework for the institution of bilateral cooperation
in the peaceful use, development and control of nuclear energy,
taking into account their respective obligations under the Treaty
on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to which both the Republic
of Turkey and the United States of America are parties.
The Agreement demonstrates the parties’ willingness to cooperate,
among other things, in the transfer of information, technology,
material, equipment and components, and in nuclear research and
development for peaceful purposes.
The Agreement also provides a basis for mutual understanding in
the nuclear energy policies of the parties for peaceful purposes,
and underlines the strong commitment of both countries to the development
of civil nuclear energy in a safe and secure manner.
This Agreement shall remain in force for a period of 15 years
and shall continue to be in force thereafter in 5 year periods.”
